Received Pronunciation, or RP, is a distinctive standard accent known for its neutral character, devoid of regional dialectal traits. In the United Kingdom, it is predominantly associated with England but not exclusive to any particular area.
RP carries strong social connotations, serving as a symbol of ecation and often linked to the upper and middle classes, often referred to as Oxford English or King's/Queen's English. It's a rare skill among indivials from less privileged backgrounds, like a Welsh coal miner, who might not naturally possess or use it.
RP is closely intertwined with certain professions, such as lawyers, stockbrokers, politicians, diplomats, teachers at elite institutions, and national broadcasters. These roles reflect the social status associated with RP, imbuing it with a sense of refinement and elegance.
As a benchmark for standard British English, RP is commonly taught in foreign language instruction worldwide. Non-native speakers, when proficient, can often surpass many native English speakers in terms of pronunciation accuracy.
One key characteristic of RP is the prominent use of the "r" sound. In compound words where the first word ends with a non-high vowel and the second word starts with a vowel, RP introces an extra "r" between them, as in "the idea(r) of it" and "saw(r) it in the room." Additionally, when "r" appears between two vowel letters, like in "very," RP elicits a trill sound (an [ɾ] in phonetic terms, a rapid burst of the [r] sound without the tongue touching the palate).
在中国,普通话是最正确、最标准的官方语言,而在英国,虽然没有官方规定,但在英语的发展历史中,有一种发音逐渐形成其重要性,成为公认的最标准英式发音,这就是Received Pronunciation,简称为RP。
