It was getting dark and light snow was coming down, so he almost didn't see the old lady standing on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in front of her obviously brandnew and expensive car and got out of the car.

While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn't look safe. He looked poor and hungry.

He could see she was frightened, standing there in the cold. He said, “I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in your car to keep warm? My name is Bryan.”

A tire was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and made his hands hurt. As he was tightening the tire's nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his help.

Bryan never thought about the money. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person assistance. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed home.

Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat and warm up before she made her trip home. The waitress came over with a sweet smile and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant (怀孕的). Although the waitress looked tired and walked painfully due to the pregnancy, she still served the lady.

began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet, and the street lamp gave little light. Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.

When he reached the middle of the bridge, he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him. He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.

Just then, he heard short, quick steps closely behind him. By the time he reached the other side of the bridge, he could almost feel someone at his heels. He turned around and there stood a man in a large coat. A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very few parts of his face could be seen.

Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was. Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.

Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at this hour. He knew that the people who lived there were very rich. Almost without realizing what he was doing, he began following the stranger quickly.

The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows. A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. About half an hour had passed, Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground on the other side of the wall.

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a onehundreddollar bill. The waitress quickly went to make change for her onehundreddollar bill, but the lady had driven off. She had gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered why the lady did so. Then she noticed something written on the napkin. There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don't owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out the way I'm helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: do not let this chain of love end with you.” Under the napkin were four more onehundreddollar bills.

That night when the waitress got home from work, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. She was wondering how the lady knew she and her husband were in need. With the baby to be born next month, life was going to be hard. She knew how worried her husband was, and now everything is going to be all right. Knowing what had happened, her husband, Bryan, shed tears of joy and gratitude.

Now Frank knew what the man wanted to do. Everyone knew that Oakfield House was filled with artworks worth millions of dollars. It was clear to Frank that the family inside was in danger. Would the man have a weapon? Would he be strong enough to overpower the man before he could harm the people inside? Frank's heart was racing with fear. He reached for his cellphone to call the police, but found it out of power. If only he had charged his phone before leaving the office, but it was too late.

Frank couldn't just stand in the dark and wait. He had to do something, even if it meant risking his own life. At his feet he silently found several goodsized stones, and he threw them with all his strength right at the windows of the house. The crash woke up the people inside the house and a light came on upstairs. The man froze, not quite knowing what had just happened. Lights came on everywhere in the house and within a minute the night was filled with sounds of police sirens screaming toward Oakfield House.
